Richard C."Dutch" Starzman, longtime Moses Lake resident passed away Sunday, April 22, 2012 at his home. A potluck celebration will be held on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at the ranch, 252 Road 5 N.E., Moses Lake. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at Wilbur Cemetery, Wilbur, Washington. Dutch was born in Brewster, Washington on Feb. 5, 1922. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp. during WWW II in the South Pacific, being honorably discharged as a Sergeant. After his service, Dutch started competing in rodeos and while competing at the Grand Coulee rodeo he met Dorothy. He and his wife Dorothy owned and operated a successful quarter horse and cattle ranch on Rocky Gorge Road in Newport, Washington raising champion quarter horses including their star cutting horse, Latigo Mount. They moved to Moses Lake in 1974 and operated Badly Scattered Land & Cattle Co. He loved spending time with family and friends and enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include his three children, Daniel Starzman, Soap Lake, Chris Starzman, Moses Lake, Debbi Buchite, Newport. Dutch was preceded in death by his wife Dorothyin 2004, and a young daughter Deena. Gary Ward Sewell, 69, of Pendleton, Ore., passed away Friday, April 27, 2012, in his home.

Gary was born April 28, 1942, in Cottonwood, to Robert and Kathryn (Wyatt) Sewell. He was raised on the family ranch at Lucile, Idaho. He rode his horse to attend a one-room grade school at Cow Creek. He graduated from Salmon River High, at Riggins, in 1960.

After high school, he attended the University of Idaho for two years. He went on to ranching, rodeoing and sales. On Sept. 13, 1985, he married Debbie Nunnally in Pendleton, Ore. Living in Umatilla County since 1968, he was a realtor with Garton and Associates and, later, Old West Realty. During his life, he participated in rodeos throughout the Northwest and beyond. As a talented cowboy and team roper, he earned his share of the cash and prizes, including the national championship in the Century Roping at Reno, Nev., in 2010 with Troy Perkins. His passion was rodeo and raising and training horses. He was a gold card member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA).

Survivors include his wife, Debbie Sewell of Pendleton; father Bob Sewell of Milton-Freewater, Ore.; sons Clint Sewell of Clarkston, Rob Sewell of Pendleton, and Chad Hoisington of Bend, Ore.; daughter Tami Ewen of Kennewick; brothers Darrel Sewell of Baker, Ore., and Bow Sewell of Milton-Freewater; sister Eileen Uhlenkott of Cottonwood; in-laws Jerry and Joan Nunnally of Grangeville; and nine grandchildren; as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Kathryn Sewell, and his grandparents.

A viewing will be conducted from noon to 5:30 p.m. today at Pendleton Pioneer Chapel. A celebration of life service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Pendleton Roundup Grounds. Burial will take place at Olney Cemetery, with a reception to follow back at the Pendleton Roundup Grounds.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made at Banner Bank to the Gary Sewell Memorial Century Team Roping fund.
